Fabulous Friday Tutorial-Seam Binding

Hello Glittery Katie here- this week for the Fabulous Friday Tutorial and I shall be sharing a technique with you that I use a lot! I love making tags and I like to finish them off with a colour co-ordinated ribbon....

I use seam binding which is has a texture like a silk ribbon, I buy 5m packets of seam binding in cream or white so I can colour it however I want.

In this case I wanted to colour co-ordinate my ribbon with my wintery blue tag......

...I used Distress Stain and ran the inker over my seam binding ribbon but I didn't want a solid colour....

...so I left patches of ribbon uncoloured.....

I then sprayed the ribbon with some Perfect Pearls spray also in blue....

...this added a lovely pearly twinkly to the ribbon.

I then squidged the ribbon up as I wanted a crinkled look and heated it with my heat gun....

...I have no patience and wanted to speed the drying process up- be careful and don't over heat your ribbon!

The ribbon now is crinkly and has a lovely patchy, vintage look...

Now the ribbon is dry you can add some more colour if you want.

You can also colour the ribbon with ink pads, paints (which makes the ribbon a little stiffer but still works well!), alcohol inks or alcohol pens. It's a very versatile ribbon and it's fun to experiment.

Finally I trim the edges of the ribbon with a diagonal cut to stop it from fraying- although that can be a good look....

...and I thread it through my finished tag..

It's a simple technique but a coloured ribbon can really finish off a project!

Bombshell Stamps Fabulous Friday Tutorial: 3-D Paper Piecing

Hey everybody! It's Leslie here, guest designing for Bombshell Stamps, doing this week's Fabulous Friday Tutorial on 3-D paper piecing. This is a very fun and effective technique that can either be real simple or real complex, depending on the size/shape of the image you are paper piecing.

I incorporated several different techniques in the creation of my 3-D Skullz note card:

1. Black magic colored pencil technique - stamping on black cardstock with white ink and coloring the open areas of the image with colored pencils
2. Positive/negative technique - infusing [stamping on black cardstock with white ink] and [stamping on white cardstock with black ink]
3. 3-D paper piecing - stamping image on two colors of paper/cardstock, cutting, and adhering the cut pieces to the focal image with foam dimensional pads

I chose the awesome Sugar Skulls stamp set for this tutorial because the size of the skulls is great for teaching this technique. And I will apologize ahead of time for the lighting in these photos.

Stamp the skulls and flowers on black cardstock in white dye ink.

Color the flowers with colored pencils - any brand will do. I happen to have Crayola Twistables that my granddaughter uses when she comes to visit. :)

Stamp the skulls and flowers on white cardstock in black ink.

Cut out the skulls and discard the rest of the image.

Line up the cut out skulls with the skulls on the base image and adhere them, either flat against the base or with very thin dimensional pads, depending on the overall amount of dimension you want to achieve.

Stamp the skulls and flowers once more on white cardstock in black ink.

Cut this set of skulls out, place 3-D foam pads on the back of them, and set aside.

At this point, go ahead and create your card, cutting and matting the layers, and embellishing as desired.

Finish the card by placing the second set of cut out skulls over top of the first ones using the 3-D foam pads you placed on the back of them earlier.

Supplies:

• Paper and More black cardstock; Hammermill white cardstock; DCWV hot pink cardstock
• Bombshell Stamps Sugar Skulls stamp set
• SweetStamps white dye ink
• Memento Tuxedo Black ink
• Crayola Twistables colored pencils
• Tiny white flat-back pearls

That's all there is to paper piecing - it's a lot of fun and will yield a striking design on a card or project! Hope you've enjoyed this and have found some inspiration to give it a try! Wear Brown Shoes Day

Greetings! Alison here to bring you the December Wacky Holiday. As always, I get all of my holiday info at Holiday Insights. This month, I was intrigued by Wear Brown Shoes day. It's always celebrated on December 4th, but since we have other goings on for Wednesday, we decided to share it with you today. "It's very easy to participate in this special day. Just dust off that seldom worn pair of brown shoes, and put 'em on your feet. Brown boots, loafers, or any other brown colored footwear will do. Don't tiptoe around. Wear them wherever you go." Here's what some of my teamies and I have created.

Meet Ms. December

Amanda Phillips is Bomshell's Ms. December. She brings her wonderful coloring and design skills, plus her mixed media prowess with her.

Here's a little interview with her so that you can get to know her a bit better.

1. Brief info about yourself, including your name, where you live, your family (if you want), etc.
Hello I am Amanda Phillips. My hubby and I live right outside of Charleston,  South Carolina USA. We have five children (grown and OUT of the house) and two Granddaughters, our latest only being a month old. Both little ladies.

2. How long have you been stamping and/or crafting?
I have been crafting and stamping since I was four. My first production was a bouquet of flowers made for my Grandmother, who supplied the construction paper and the paste they were made from. (I still have them to this day.)

3. What are your favorite Bombshell sets and why?
I really can't pick just one, but since the questionnaire is making me. I would have to say Rosie the Riveter Digital set and of course the Bombshell Angel set! ("Hubba Hubba!")

4. What kind of projects do you like to do?
My favorite projects are the ones where I get to steal a little hour here or there. It isn't something I need to do for someone or a commission but something that catches my fancy and something wonderful happens with it; like making a plastic cup into a charm or melting something together that you know doesn't fit. but it works. Magic!

5. What are your favorite coloring mediums?
OOOh! That is a good question. Copics markers are what I use daily, with anything that sprays coming next. But I always end up back at my watercolor tray.

6. Describe your crafting "style".
My style is Vintage Chic with a compulsion for exact matching details. Paper, Copic markers, ribbon, and brads all must match or it will haunt me in my sleep.

7. Describe your crafting process. Do you start with a stamp set? A sketch? A technique you want to 
use?
I generally start with a stamp for my teams then go from there, theme and such being a factor. But, for myself, it is the space. I can look at a wall for hours deciding what will live there.

8. Do you have any other hobbies?
Cooking. I love to cook and since we just built our house I have the counter space to make some pretty good grub. I make a really great cheesecake and on soup day I can have up to six different kinds on the stove.

9. Free for all including little facts, etc. about you.
 Let's see. I am a self-educated artist that didn't get a degree till very late in life and it wasn't in art, which is kinda weird since it is all I ever wanted to do. Only through art have I felt accomplished. I love the my fellow artists. We are a nutty bunch that just "gets" each other.
